"10 Refreshing, Recession-Proof Summer Tips"

Summertime is a great season to
re-energize and refresh our spirits. The same is true for
our business model.
From 2003-2005, I was a freelance columnist for The
Daily Transcript in San Diego. This was a fun assignment.
Unfortunately, I was distracted by some challenges with
my business model. Revenues were flat, and I lost the inspiration
to publish. (ever have a similar experience?)
Here's what happened.
I attended a FranklinCovey business conference in Long Beach,
California. I was told by the Director of PR that Dr. Stephen
Covey was booked solid, and not available for interviews.

When the Los Angeles Times
called her and cancelled their interview, she suddenly had
an opening.
She asked me if I would fill in.
(I paused 3 seconds for dignity.) Then I proceeded to enjoy
one of the best interviews of my career with Dr. Covey.
My article won an award and I was asked back to interview
him again the following year. Traffic to my website and
leads increased, and other interviews with leading business
authors and speakers became much easier.
That was a really refreshing experience,
and a boost to my business!

Based on this experience, I have assembled
these 10 tips to help you sustain growth - even during a recession:
- Keep your
mindset 'in check.' What limiting beliefs do
you have about your talents and skills that stop you?
Find a way to catch yourself and manage that situation
when it arises.
- Develop
a select set of relationships with executives in companies
that you admire. Make yourself visible. Ask if
you can interview their top executive. Publish your results.
This will increase your visibility, network, and credibility.
- Write a growth plan for your
business. Most entrepreneurs keep their marketing
and growth plans in their heads. They get easily distracted.
Results never happen--or, if they do, they take much longer
to attain. Need help getting started? Visit
our store.
- Celebrate
small successes. Put away your inner critic who
wants you to do things perfectly. As I say to my clients,
"Perfect is the enemy of done."
- Repeat
after me: "I am in the marketing business."
Change your perspective about marketing being something
you do only when you need clients. Everything you say,
do, and wear reflects your company's brand. Embrace marketing
and demand generation as an integral piece of what you
do.
- Build a
supportive environment. Who do you spend time
with? Are they lifelong learners? Do they have fun in
their business? Are they profitable? Do they genuinely
care about your success? Are they financially and emotionally
wealthy? Tony Robbins says, "People's lives are a
direct reflection of the expectations of your peer group."
- Upgrade
your skills. Are your communications skills weak?
Are you struggling to manage your cash flow? Go find an
expert to help you grow in these areas. T. Harv Eker,
author of "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind,"
recommends you invest 10 percent of your earnings in an
Education account.
- Visualize
where you're going. Write down (or create a vision
poster/board) of the business and life you want to attain.
Include images of the experiences you envision. Put it
prominently in your office or work space. Tell all of
your allies and partners.
- Strategize
your actions. It's one thing to envision what
you want your business to look like in 3 years. It's equally
important to have a written action plan for how you are
going to get there. Pick just 1-2 strategies and write
a plan. Stick to it. (I write about this in my upcoming
book).
- Stay on
the FUN channel. Allocate at least 1-2 hours
per day of fun into your day. Find time to exercise, garden,
dance, watch a comedy, sing, or whatever makes you feel
lighter. Life is too short. Besides--it IS summertime.
We all need our Vitamin D!
